Guatemala Day 7 - Lake Atitlan Villages

  • Breakfast at “The Deli” in Panajachel – Recommended by a group of Americans who live here.  It was very good.  We noticed that this is where all the international humanitarian workers eat.  It was very interesting to hear them talk (in English) about their service.
  • Lake Atitlan and surrounding villages via hired boat
  • Dinner at Lazzaronis in Panajachel - ran into the missionaries

Here are some pics.
Lake Atitlan - A view on a clear day.  Unfortunately for us, it was cloudy while we were there, so we didn't get this spectacular of a view.  (This is a picture from an earlier trip that Jill's parents took to Lake Atitlan.)

We challenged these three girls to a basketball game.  They were pretty good.  What a memory!

Washing clothes in the lake

A typical bathroom behind a curtain - no toilet seat.

We saw many people packed in the back of trucks, going to and from work.

This boy is fishing.  He has already caught several small fish.

Loved seeing these guys on the lake, fishing in their little wooden boats.

Another favorite site - a little boy packing around his little sister.

We saw a lot of this - coffee beans left out to dry.

School children watching a science demonstration

Cathedral from the 1500s

The saints in this cathedral were dressed in native atire from the different clans.

This guy just bought an air mattress and is trying to fit it into his net without letting the air out.

These people are buying used clothing from the U.S.

We drove Tuk Tuk (3-wheel taxis) down the narrow streets to this LDS church in the small village of San Atitlan.

Very narrow streets!

As if the street wasn't already narrow enough, we saw many people selling fruit outside their front door.

One of my favorites!

We had people approaching us during dinner, trying to sell stuff.  This woman is trying to sell bananas.  We saw her  early this morning with a full basket.  She was still at it late into the evening.

Communication lesson:  Brent meant to order three tacos.  Instead they brought him three orders of three tacos (9 total).  He gave one plate to the ladies in the kitchen. Then we saw the missionaries walk by on their way to an appointment so we offered the rest to them.

As you can see, it's been another great day.  We are sleeping with the balcony door open - spanish music from some kind of a concert on the beach somewhere is serenading us to sleep.  This is the life.
