Guatemala Day 2: Tikal, Flores

4AM wake-up.  4:30 met in lobby and left a bag with the front desk.  We'll be back tomorrow night.  Caught a taxi to the airport and took a short 1 hour flight to Flores, Peten.  Drove through some fascinating little villages on our way to Tikal.  Thoroughly enjoyed every bit of Tikal including the Mayan ruins, the howling monkeys, and a nice run along a secluded trail with Jill.

Checked into our hotel, Peten Esplendido.  It's not luxurious like the Barcelo, but it's a nice clean hotel with a balcony overlooking Lake Peten Itza.  Went to Flores and bumped into two young couples from Utah.  We invited them to join us for dinner at Mesa de Maya.  I ate armadillo.  Not bad.  Ended the evening with root beer floats at "Cool Beans".

Exploring a side street on our way to Tikal in the rental car

Driving through some small towns between Flores and Tikal

Pigs and dogs were wandering the streets everywhere we turned.  We also saw many people riding small motorcycles.  One motorcycle had four people on it (mom, dad, and two kids).

Entering Tikal

Watch out for Jaguars, Turkeys, Snakes, and who knows what.

This pyramid and these stones were used to tell time, and calculate the years and seasons.

 Howling Monkeys

People were sweeping leaves with these homemade brooms.  They swept the trail to keep snakes away.
Bish brought frisbees to donate to the Mayan gods.

Found the frisbee after throwing it off of one of the temples
